The exhibition featuring the work of ten documentary photographers. Merhabarev will open at the Karşı Sanat gallery on Monday, 4 December. This exhibition was opened in Yerevan on October and was very successful. It has been also published a book including all the pictures of this exhibition in four language.
The name of this exhibition is composed by two words with the same meaning 'hello': "Merhaba" in Turkish and "Barev" in Armenian. Ten photographers from Istanbul and Erivan gathered in March 2006 and decided to perform a collective workshop .The point of origin was the insufficient knowledge of two societies about each other. They spent one week in each city and during that time they tried not only to photograph the appearances but also the reality underneath them.

They shot thousands of pictures and the 130 ones that are picked up among them established the MERHABAREV exhibition.
Undoubtedly the time has been limited and both cultural cities served endless photographic opportunities. With their cameras they were treated friendly in official areas, crowded avenues, residences to which we were specially invited, faraway quarters and back streets. With the help of our photos we wish to establish a bridge between people, nations and cultures.
During the exhibition which will be on display at Karşı Sanat Gallery from 4 December until 23 December 2006, you can see Yerevan's pictures taken by Turkish photographers Serra Akcan, Kerem Uzel, Mehmet Kaçmaz, Tolga Sezgin and Özcan Yurdalan and Istanbul's pictures by Armenian photographers Karen Mirzoyan, German Avagyan, Ruben Mangasaryan, Nelli Şişmanyan and Anahit Hayrapetyan. |

Ilker Maga's Exibition 'Istanbul: A Story of the Sea' at Leica Photography International Magazine |
 |
| ©LFI |
Most prestigious international photography magazine LFI published an article titled 'Istanbul, Unique City' about Ilker Maga's exhibition named 'Istanbul: A Story of the Sea'. Writer Carla Susanne Erdmann made an interview with Maga on the exhibition.
(from Carla Susanne Erdmann's article)
'Istanbul smells like no other city I know. Wherever you go you can smell the sea ... and the fish. People in Istanbul love fish. And they also love cats; Istanbul is home to an empire of cats. And there's no other city in the world where people and seagulls are quite so interconnected. It's an enchanted city, full of surprises - like a fairytale," says Ilker Maga, bubbling over with enthusiasm. Now here's a man who's found his passion in life. His heart resonates to the beat of Istanbul. Several times a year he travels there to find himself amid a nation which - for more than just economic reasons - is coaxing its capital to open up to the west. Countless newspapers and publishers have long set up offices here. "Istanbul is the only city for me," says Maga, who loves alternating between countries and some years will spend more time in Istanbul than in his home town of Bremen in northern Germany...'

| 'Merhabarev Yerevan-Istanbul' Exhibition Opened in Yerevan |
|
Ten documentary photographers from Nar Photos and Patker Photo put together the exhibition called "Merhabarev/Yerevan-Istanbul," which depicts daily life in Yerevan and Istanbul. It opened on Oct. 25 and runs through Nov. 2
The exhibit's title is a combination of the words "Merhaba" and "Barev" meaning "Hello" in Turkish and Armenian respectively. The Turkish documentary photographers are Ozcan Yurdalan, Serra Akcan, Mehmet Kacmaz, Kerem Uzel and Tolga Sezgin, and those from Armenia are Ruben Mangasaryan, Karen Mirzoyan, Anahit Hayrapetyan, Nelli Sismanyan and German Avagyan. According to the project which have been started in March, photographers from Istanbul and photographers from Yerevan, worked respectively in Yerevan and Istanbul, during one week to reflect daily life with their cameras. Mainly highlighting the importance of direct dialogue and an unprejudiced approach, the photographers focused on the importance of greetings in all encounters by combining the two words.

The photographers also aimed at emphasizing the importance of the future and of looking towards the future even when catching daily life on film. In the belief that relations between the two nations can become normal by overcoming problems stemming from a lack of dialogue and overcoming prejudices, the photographers aimed to reflect what they saw and experienced through their lenses. After first opening in Yerevan's best-known cultural center the Moscow Cinema, it's on in Istanbul on first December and will then go to many countries . This project supported by Heinrich Böll Stiftung Turkey, Anadolu Culture and Karşı Art Works. |
